On this week’s episode of ‘For the Love of Dogs’, we met Spike who couldn’t help but get excitable around feet! All sorts of things can trigger unusual behaviour in our canine friends, so we’ve put together a guide to help you keep your pups relaxed and calm.

Reinforce good behaviour

When your furry friend is calm and well behaved, it’s great to reward them for positive behaviour as this will likely mean they’ll repeat it. Show them physical affection and if they are motivated by treats, give them a couple when they’re calm.

Avoid encouraging an excitable pooch

Reacting positively to an over excited dog will only serve to encourage the behavior and it’ll become more frequent. Giving them attention and affection is like telling them that you like what they’re doing, so try to ignore your dog when they’re misbehaving and avoid eye contact and interaction at these times.

Remain calm yourself

Our pets are very instinctive and pick up on our own attitudes and feelings sometimes, so if you begin to panic, shout or fuss, they are likely to feed off of this energy. Remain calm when your canine companion is becoming over excited, speak in low tones and keep your body relaxed.

Check what they’re eating

If your dog is becoming hyperactive or over excitable, it may be down to their diet. Inexpensive foods can often have additional ingredients that offer little nutritional value, and much like junk food can affect our behaviour, the same can be said for our beloved dogs. Be sure to feed your pup foods with identifiable ingredients which are natural where possible.

Try a natural solution

If your four legged friend gets over excited frequently, try our YuCALM range of supplements. Our scientifically proven ingredients promote calm behaviour, ease anxiety and support your dog in becoming happier. Made with ingredients including Lemon Balm and L-Theanin, YuCALM supports the natural calming pathways in the brain whilst maintaining happy hormone levels.

If you’re inspired by the pogdogs, and the great work of Battersea Dogs Home in keeping senior pets active while waiting for their forever home, then now might be the time to try YuMOVE for your pet. You can also get 25% off iMove – our human joint supplement, so both owners and their pooches can enjoy walkies together.
